Although Safety & Health is just one component of sustainability at Travelers, it has a significant impact on the successes of our company, our shareholders and the communities we serve. Joanne Moynihan, VP of Workers Compensation Claim Product Development & Strategy, shares her thoughts on the importance of Safety & Health and what it means for our company’s long-term value.

Joanne plays a key role in helping shape workers compensation strategy at Travelers. In the three teams she manages – the Workers Compensation Business Performance Analytics team, the Major Case group and the Strategy Development team – she leads efforts to analyze claim data, identify emerging trends and assess the overall health of the business.

Her teams also manage severe claims, ensuring that complex cases receive the attention they require. At the same time, she helps drive strategic initiatives that improve current claim products and develop new solutions to foster our company’s business growth. “To me, it’s about working with our customers and insureds to help them understand the importance of workplace safety and preventing hazards – and that Travelers is here to support them,” says Joanne.

By leveraging decades of claim data, Travelers develops strategies that mitigate risk, helping the company maintain its position as the No. 1 writer of workers compensation in the United States. One example of this innovation is Wysa for Return to Work, an AI-powered chatbot designed to support injured employees by helping them build coping skills and improve well-being. And by doing so, people with risk factors may ultimately return to work more quickly after engaging with the app.

She further emphasizes that when catastrophic injuries occur, Travelers steps in immediately to support not just the injured employee, but their family and employer as well. “This is how we fulfill the Travelers Promise and contribute to the sustained value of our business,” Joanne remarks. Offering guidance, resources and a compassionate ear helps ease the recovery process and reinforces the company’s long-term commitment to those it serves.

Joanne believes that great change comes from genuine care, and employees can also play a part in creating sustained value for our company. “The simple act of caring can have a lasting impact.”
