Travelers EDGE® Graduate Series – Sulaiman Sesay
Who is Sulaiman? Can you share where you are from and a bit about yourself?
I am originally from Sierra Leone in West Africa. I spent the first 16 years of my life in Sierra Leone then moved to Minnesota in 2012 where I grew up with my younger brother and my older sister. My mother worked very hard to be able to bring us here in search of education opportunities.
What is your current role at Travelers?
I am currently an Associate Account Executive. I work as an underwriter in our private non-profit bond and specialty sector. I manage the profitability, growth and retention of an assigned book of business.
Prior to joining the company, where did you attend college and what did you major in?
I went to Augsburg University, majoring in Business Management with a double minor in Marketing and Management Information Systems.
Can you share your Travelers EDGE® Program journey and how it led to your current position?
I initially was interested in the Travelers EDGE program because I wanted to learn more about different career paths that I could go into with my business degree.
I had the opportunity to intern at Travelers for two summers through Travelers EDGE. The first was with underwriting and the second was in the business center in operations. During my senior year of college, I was offered a full-time role as a Business Analyst which I took and served in for over two years. I then explored other opportunities outside of Travelers but ended up coming back to the company as an underwriter after missing the collaborative culture fostered here.
How did the program help you develop skills that are essential in your current job?
My current role requires the ability to create and maintain strong relationships. The program had workshops that focused on core skills like communication, collaboration, accountability, etc. All of these skills play a large role in my career success and help immensely in my day to day.
Did you take advantage of mentorship through Travelers EDGE? How did that affect your career journey?
The mentorship I experienced through Travelers EDGE helped me become aware of different business units within Travelers and allowed me to connect more easily with people who work within those units. This allowed me the opportunity to shadow individuals within various roles and learn about the different roles I could pursue.
When I graduated from Augsburg University and completed the Travelers EDGE program to start my full-time role, I was able to then foster the relationships I had already formed during my internship, which made the transition easier.
What advice would you give to individuals considering applying to Travelers?
It’s a great company focused on teamwork and collaboration that emphasizes success as a team. I always feel like when I need help with something or have a question, people are willing to help. Ultimately, Travelers provides an environment where you can bring your true self to work every day.
