Together We Thrive: Creating Win-Win Opportunities through Strategic Public Policy
Travelers is committed to furthering constructive public policy dialogue around issues core to our business and on behalf of our customers, our agents and brokers, and the communities we serve. Jessica Kearney, Vice President of Public Policy at the Travelers Institute, shares some insight on the company’s public policy initiatives and how they play an important role in our sustainability efforts.
For 15 years, the Travelers Institute, our public policy division, has amplified the expertise of our more than 30,000 employees, helping shape key public policy discussions. By partnering with senior leaders, government and research institutions, the Travelers Institute strives to ensure that diverse perspectives inform its initiatives. The insights gleaned from experts are then shared widely through conferences, reports, the Wednesdays with Woodward® webinar series and the Travelers Institute Risk & Resilience podcast. Through the end of 2024, the Travelers Institute has hosted or participated in nearly 1,200 events spanning more than 200 cities, fostering meaningful discussions and impact.
One example of these programs is the Travelers Institute’s disaster preparedness symposium series, where it convenes business leaders and members of the community to explore natural disaster readiness. This initiative, which addresses wildfires and extreme weather events such as hurricanes, shares helpful resources and insights with families, businesses and communities.
Another Travelers Institute initiative is the Every Second Matters® campaign, which focuses on educating the public about distracted driving in partnership with Travelers’ Personal Insurance business. Jessica explains, “Since 2017, we’ve hosted more than 100 auto safety events, and we’ve helped thousands of people turn on smartphone settings that block notifications while they drive.”
Another standout is the Cyber: Prepare, Prevent, Mitigate, Restore® series, launched in 2016. Since that time, the Travelers Institute has hosted more than 60 educational programs, providing small and mid-sized businesses, nonprofits and municipalities with critical knowledge and resources to help them address cybersecurity threats.
In considering how individual contributions create sustained value at Travelers, Jessica encourages her colleagues not to underestimate the broader impact of their work. “Every piece ladders up. When you bottle all the insight and expertise across more than 30,000 of us, it’s truly remarkable.”
The Travelers Institute offers a variety of resources on its website, including free and publicly accessible webinars and the new Travelers Institute Risk & Resilience podcast. Travelers employees and other business professionals are encouraged to leverage these resources to gain valuable insights and maximize their impact in the workplace.
